Year 3/4: Cave Painting

The Year 3/4s are studying the Stone Age and in art, we have been looking at cave paintings. We learned about the caves at Lascaux, Chauvet and El Castillo and discussed how the pigments and marks may have been made. Then, we made cave paintings of our own.

We began by making our background paper look as much like a cave wall as possible:

We practised drawing in a prehistoric style and then transferred our designs onto the background paper:

We experimented with different painting techniques using natural pigments:

Our prehistoric animals looked very effective:

The children 'signed' their work using stencilled handprints:
