Learning in Honeypot Preschool
The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas
Since returning to Honeypot from the summer holidays, we have started to look at 'feelings' with the use of the Colour Monster book. This gives us support to help the children to recognise their emotions. It also helps them to know what makes them feel those emotions e.g. not sharing can make us sad or angry.
In our activity, the children matched the colours of different pompoms and felt pieces with the use of tweezers, to promote their fine motor skills and by using pots with lids that twist for our larger motor movements. We did this whist discussing what emotions they were sorting, and they were able to associate the colours with what emotion they represent.
We have also discovered how to express different emotions in Makaton sign language; such as happy, sad, calm, scared, angry and love. We actively used these signs when talking about feelings, and it's been great to see the children picking up the Makaton signs and starting to remember & use them.
On our Blue room board, the children helped to colour-in our big Colour Monster poster. We also spoke about the different colours they were using, what they could see and what 'Colour Monster' they had made.
