Canine Therapy

Canine therapy is a way to support pupils in recovering from physical and mental health difficulties. Therapy dogs are trained to provide affection and comfort, which pupils find hugely beneficial. Our school’s Canine Therapist, Michelle Smith, is in school for one afternoon per week and supports pupils on a 1:1 basis.

Y2 Boy – Mickey is a gentle dog. He licks my hand like a kiss.

Y2 Boy – I love Mickey. I get to play with him.

Benefits of Canine Therapy in Schools

1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety

   - Interacting with therapy dogs has been proven to lower stress levels and reduce anxiety. For students facing academic pressures, social challenges, or personal difficulties, the presence of a calm and friendly dog can create a sense of comfort and emotional relief.

2. Enhances Social Skills

   - Therapy dogs encourage positive social interactions among students. Children who may struggle with communication or social anxiety often find it easier to engage with others when a dog is present, fostering teamwork, empathy, and relationship-building.

3. Improves Emotional Well-Being

   - Canine therapy helps boost emotional health by promoting feelings of happiness and calm. Simply petting or playing with a dog can trigger the release of oxytocin, a hormone linked to bonding and reducing stress, making students feel more connected and supported.

4. Promotes a Sense of Safety and Security

   - Therapy dogs can create a safe and non-judgmental space where students feel comfortable expressing themselves. This sense of security can be particularly beneficial for students dealing with trauma, bullying, or mental health challenges.

5. Teaches Empathy and Responsibility

   - Caring for and interacting with therapy dogs teaches students valuable life skills like empathy, responsibility, and compassion. It encourages them to be mindful of others’ needs, both human and animal, which is essential for personal development.

6. Supports Emotional Regulation

   - For students who may struggle with emotional regulation, therapy dogs can serve as a calming presence. Interacting with a dog can help students regain control over their emotions, reducing instances of outbursts or anxiety attacks.

7. Creates a Positive School Environment

    - The presence of therapy dogs helps build a warm and welcoming school atmosphere. Students, staff, and visitors often find that therapy animals bring joy and positivity to the environment, making the school a happier place to be.
